Pencil and AdSmash both generate AI ad creative from several video and image models, but they package it differently. Pencil sells a monthly quota of generations plus direct ad launch and enterprise controls; AdSmash sells dollar credits plus ad creative intelligence, brand references and a read-only Meta performance link. AdSmash publishes this page, so every Pencil claim links to Pencil's own pricing page, help centre or platform pages, checked on October 2, 2026.
- Pencil is a metered-generation platform that launches and tracks ads on several ad platforms, with approvals and governance on its custom Pro tier.
- AdSmash bills in dollar credits and adds ad creative intelligence and competitor watchlists on Pro and Team, brand references stored once, and an optional managed service.
- The most decision-relevant cost fact: a Pencil generation is, in most cases, one interaction with an AI model, and at Pencil's published Seedance 2.5 rate Core's 50 monthly generations cover about 11 seconds of video. That figure is our calculation from Pencil's rate list.

What Pencil does in 2026
Pencil's homepage now positions it as an AI operating system for marketing that aggregates AI models with enterprise governance. The product still centres on ads: its platform page lays out a workflow of Briefing, Generate, Understand, Edit, Approve, Launch and Evaluate, with Launch "direct to Meta, Google & more."
That launch step is a real difference. Pencil's integrations page lists Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Google Ads, DV360 and YouTube as generally available, while Foreplay, an ad-intelligence integration, is in closed beta. AdSmash does not publish to any ad platform (see the next section).
Pencil sells three tiers. Core and Growth are self-serve. Pro is custom and adds unlimited users, brands and markets, role access controls and dedicated customer success, according to its pricing page. The pricing page also says "Join 35,000+ teams making 2,000,000+ ads with Pencil"; that is Pencil's own marketing figure and we have not verified it.
Pencil's help centre dated a pricing update to 23 September 2026. Under it, rates follow model cost and text work is priced in seven size buckets, from XS to XXXL. If you read a Pencil review written before that date, its generation math may be out of date.
According to Pencil's rate list, it also names HeyGen Avatar 5 Digital Twin and HeyGen V3 lipsync models, so avatar and lip-synced video are part of what its generations can buy.
What AdSmash does, and what it doesn't
AdSmash is an AI ad creative platform. Here is what it documents, from its homepage and pricing page:
- Brand references. Products, likenesses, colors and typography are stored once and reused across generations.
- Several providers on one canvas. The models it names are Seedance 2.5, Gemini Omni, GPT Image 2.5, Grok Imagine 1.5, Happy Horse 1.1 and MiniMax H3.
- Ad creative intelligence and competitor watchlists. Both are on Pro and Team. Free has no watchlists.
- A read-only Meta link. AdSmash's Meta connection imports campaign structure, creative information and performance metrics, and "cannot create, edit, publish, pause, or delete anything in Meta." It covers Meta only, and you launch ads somewhere else.
- A managed service. You send a brief instead of building the ads yourself, and shippable ads come back through a human QA step. That is a separate workflow, not part of every plan.
If you want one tool to push ads live on TikTok or Google, that list is the gap.
Both name some of the same models
Both products name several of the same video and image models, but the names are not identical, and we have not checked whether the underlying models are the same.
| Model as named | Pencil's rate list | AdSmash's model list |
|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.5 | Seedance 2.5 | Seedance 2.5 |
| Gemini Omni | Gemini Omni Video (720p only) | Gemini Omni |
| MiniMax H3 | MiniMax-H3 | MiniMax H3 |
| Grok Imagine | Grok Imagine Video v1.5 | Grok Imagine 1.5 |
| Happy Horse (versions differ) | Happy Horse (no version given) | Happy Horse 1.1 |
| Veo 3.1 | Google Veo 3.1 | Not named on the pages we checked |
| GPT Image 2.5 | GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Sunburst (image models) | GPT Image 2.5 |
Pencil's rate list and AdSmash's model list are both vendor-written. Run your own product through each before you commit.

How each plan's allowance resets
Pencil's pricing page says the quota resets monthly and "any unused generations do not roll over to the next billing period." AdSmash's plan credits are valid for two months. Those are different mechanics, not a ranking.
AdSmash publishes no per-generation rates, so we cannot build an AdSmash per-second row. The cost table below is therefore Pencil only.
What a Pencil generation buys in video seconds
Pencil's help centre says a generation is, in most cases, every time you interact with an AI model. Failed generations are not charged, and fractional costs are rounded up to one decimal place.
Video is priced per second of output at a rate set by the model, in generations per second. Core works out at $0.28 per generation ($14 divided by 50) and Growth at $0.22 ($55 divided by 250), both at monthly billing. The rows below use those two prices.
| Model | Generations per second | Generations for a 15-second clip | Cost at Core | Cost at Growth | Seconds per Core month | Seconds per Growth month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seedance 2.5 | 4.5 | 67.5 | $18.90 | $14.85 | 11 | 55 |
| Google Veo 3.1 | 4.0 | 60.0 | $16.80 | $13.20 | 12 | 62 |
| Happy Horse | 2.7 | 40.5 | $11.34 | $8.91 | 18 | 92 |
| Gemini Omni Video | 1.0 | 15.0 | $4.20 | $3.30 | 50 | 250 |
Rates are from Pencil's 23 September 2026 update, checked on October 2, 2026. This is our calculation from Pencil's published rates. Generations equal seconds times rate, cost equals generations times the monthly price per generation, and seconds per month round down from the quota divided by the rate. It covers the video-model charge for a single take only. Agentic text work and retakes also use generations and are not in the table, and Gemini Omni Video is 720p only while the other rates are 1080p.
Two things stand out. A single 15-second clip on Seedance 2.5 (67.5 generations) or Veo 3.1 (60.0) needs more than Core's 50 monthly generations. And model choice moves the total a long way: Gemini Omni Video costs a quarter of Veo 3.1 per second.
Pencil's own worked example, from its rate documentation, shows the same thing. A 6-second film made of 2 scenes of 3 seconds, with 2 takes each, costs 64.2 generations with Veo 3.1 and Nano Banana Pro, and 24.6 on Kling 2.5 Turbo. The first is more than Core's monthly 50 and about a quarter of Growth's 250.
This suggests that Core is a way to evaluate Pencil, not to produce a month of video ads. That is our view from the arithmetic, not a Pencil statement, and image and text work may stretch Core further than video does. To think about how many ads a month you really need, see our post on how many ads it takes to find a winner.
Three Pencil claims worth re-checking
Older reviews and comparison pages repeat claims that Pencil's current pages don't match. We checked these on October 2, 2026:
- "Trained on $1B+ of ad spend." That figure does not appear on Pencil's current homepage, pricing page or platform page. The platform page says it analyses creatives "against billions of performance data points."
- "No avatar or UGC-style video." Pencil's rate list includes HeyGen avatar and lipsync models, as noted above.
- Which plan includes AI predictions. Pencil's own pricing page answers differently in three places: the plan cards list "Realtime AI insights and Scores" on Core, the comparison table marks "AI predictions" and "AI creative insights" as Pro only, and the FAQ says Pencil delivers creative performance predictions "on the Core plan and higher." Confirm with Pencil which applies to you.
Pencil's comparison table also ticks a brand library, a drag-and-drop creative editor and an AI image editor on all three plans, so a description of Pencil as one output with no editing does not match its current page.
Which one fits your team
Our view, tied to what each product documents:
- Pencil fits better if you want to launch and track ads on several platforms from one tool. Its integrations list covers Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn, Google Ads, DV360 and YouTube, and AdSmash publishes to none of them.
- Pencil fits better if you need approvals and governance. Sharing, comments and approval, role access controls and AI governance controls are Pro only on its comparison table, alongside unlimited generations on the plan card.
- Pencil fits better if you want to try before paying: its FAQ offers six guided ads for free.
- AdSmash fits better if you want ad creative intelligence and competitor watchlists (Pro and Team), or brand references you set once and reuse across models.
- AdSmash fits better if you would rather spend dollar credits that are valid for two months than a monthly generation count that resets, or if you want to hand a brief to a managed service with human QA.
- Either can work if you mostly need video from the models both name. Check output on your own product first, since the model names are not identical across the two lists.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Pencil cost?
As of October 2, 2026, Pencil Core is $14 a month billed monthly or $11 billed annually, for 50 generations. Growth is $55 or $44 for 250 generations. Pro is custom, with unlimited generations on its plan card (the pricing FAQ describes a Pro quota with per-unit overage charges). See the pricing section above for what a generation buys.
What does a Pencil generation buy?
A generation is, in most cases, each interaction with an AI model. Video is charged per second at a model-specific rate. On Seedance 2.5, at 4.5 generations per second, Core's 50 generations cover about 11 seconds of video, by our calculation. See the pricing section above.
Do unused Pencil generations roll over?
No. Pencil's pricing page says the quota resets monthly and unused generations do not roll over to the next billing period. AdSmash plan credits work differently: they are valid for two months, as shown on its pricing page.
Does Pencil have a free plan?
Pencil's plan cards list no free plan. Its pricing FAQ says you can sign up and create six ads through a guided experience for free, and that the full platform needs a paid plan. See the pricing section above for plan details.
Does Pencil predict ad performance, and on which plan?
Pencil's pricing page answers differently in three places. The plan cards list "Realtime AI insights and Scores" on Core, the comparison table marks "AI predictions" and "AI creative insights" as Pro only, and the FAQ says Pencil delivers creative performance predictions "on the Core plan and higher." Ask Pencil before you rely on it.
Does Pencil make avatar or lip-synced video?
Its help centre rate list includes HeyGen Avatar 5 Digital Twin and HeyGen V3 lipsync models, priced at 0.4 to 0.7 generations per second of output. Some older comparison pages say Pencil has no avatar video, which does not match that list.
